Headboards for Adjustable Beds: Wall-Mounted vs Freestanding

Adjustable bases rarely come with headboard brackets. Here is how to choose between a wall-mounted and a freestanding headboard — and how to size it.

Adjustable beds have changed the way we use the bedroom: reading upright, raising your feet after a long day, or finding the angle that finally lets you sleep. But many adjustable bases have no headboard brackets at all, and the ones that do often place them where a traditional headboard won't line up. The base also moves, so anything bolted to it moves too.

The good news: the best headboard for an adjustable bed is usually one that doesn't attach to the bed at all. That leaves two options — wall-mounted or freestanding.

Why a standard headboard doesn't always fit

A classic headboard is designed to bolt onto a fixed bed frame. On an adjustable base, that connection can be missing, misaligned, or simply unwise: every time the head section rises, the frame shifts slightly, and a headboard fixed to it can knock, squeak or loosen over time. Keeping the headboard independent solves all three problems.

Option 1: a wall-mounted headboard

A wall-mounted headboard hangs directly on the wall behind the bed, with no legs and no link to the base.

  • No contact with the moving base — no knocking, no rubbing, no noise.
  • A clean, floating look that suits modern, Scandinavian and minimalist bedrooms.
  • A clear floor, which makes the room feel lighter and easier to clean.

Tip: center the panel on the bed and set its lower edge a few inches below the top of the mattress (lying flat), so no gap shows between the two. Mount it into studs or with anchors suited to your wall.

Option 2: a freestanding headboard with legs

A freestanding headboard stands on its own legs and sits between the bed and the wall.

  • No drilling — ideal for renters, and for Airbnb or VRBO hosts who want to refresh a room without touching the walls.
  • More height and presence, for a stronger focal point behind the bed.
  • Easy to move when you rearrange the room.

Tip: place it flush against the wall and leave a small gap between the headboard and the base, so the moving parts never rub against it.

Wall-mounted or freestanding: quick comparison

Wall-mounted Freestanding (with legs)
Installation Fixed to the wall Stands behind the bed, no drilling
Look Floating, minimal Taller, more traditional presence
Best for Modern and minimalist rooms Renters, rentals, rooms that need a focal point
Contact with the base None None, with a small gap

Choosing the right size

Match the headboard width to your mattress, not to the base. Our woven leather headboards come in:

  • Twin — 41" wide
  • Full — 54" wide
  • Queen — 63" wide
  • King — 77" wide (also fits a split king)
  • California King — 72" wide

The freestanding version stands about 47" tall (48" for king). Every size is only 1.5" deep, so the bed stays close to the wall. Exact dimensions for each model are listed on its product page. For more detail, see how to choose the right headboard size.

Why woven leather works so well with adjustable beds

When the head of the bed is raised, you lean back — and the headboard becomes a backrest. Full-grain leather straps, hand-woven over solid wood, give a surface that is firm yet slightly supple, warm to the touch and easy to wipe clean. Over time the leather deepens into a rich patina, so the piece looks better every year.
