Counter Stool vs Bar Stool: The Right Height for Your Kitchen Island
Counter or bar height? One measurement decides it. Here is how to choose the right stool height and spacing for your kitchen island.
The kitchen island has become the heart of the home: morning coffee, homework, a glass of wine while dinner cooks. The stools you choose decide how comfortable those moments feel. The most common mistake is simple — buying bar stools for a counter-height island, or the reverse.

Step 1: measure your surface
Measure from the floor to the top of your island or counter.
- About 36" (35–37") — standard kitchen counters and most islands. You need counter stools.
- About 42" (41–43") — raised bars and pub tables. You need bar stools.
Step 2: leave 10 to 12 inches of knee room
The gap between the seat and the underside of the counter should be about 10–12 inches. That usually means:
- Counter stools: seat height of about 24–27".
- Bar stools: seat height of about 28–33".
Quick comparison
| Counter stool | Bar stool | |
|---|---|---|
| Surface height | About 36" | About 42" |
| Seat height | About 24–27" | About 28–33" |
| Where | Kitchen islands, standard counters | Raised bars, pub tables |
Step 3: plan the spacing
Allow about 24–26 inches of counter width per stool (more for wider seats or stools with arms). A 6-foot island comfortably seats three.
Backless or with a back?
- Backless stools slide fully under the counter and keep the kitchen visually open.
- Stools with a back are more comfortable for longer meals and work sessions.
Why woven leather and solid wood
Woven leather seats are firm yet slightly supple and stay comfortable for long conversations. They wipe clean easily — useful in a kitchen. Solid teak or walnut frames bring warmth to stone, white or concrete counters. In a rental home, a row of woven leather stools gives the kitchen the Scandinavian-modern yet rustic look that stands out in listing photos.
