They all sit low, they all hold your feet, and the words are often used interchangeably. Yet an ottoman, a pouf and a hassock are not quite the same piece of furniture. Knowing the difference helps you choose the one that fits the way you live.

The ottoman: structured and versatile

An ottoman is an upholstered seat or footrest built around a frame, often with legs and sometimes with hidden storage. Its name comes from the Ottoman Empire, where low cushioned seats were part of everyday living. Today it is the most structured of the three: firm, defined edges, often placed in front of a sofa or armchair.

The pouf: soft, frameless and easy to move

A pouf (or pouffe) has no frame and no legs. It is a sturdy cushion, stuffed until it holds its shape, that you can move from room to room. Leather poufs, hand-stitched and filled, are the most iconic: a footrest one moment, an extra seat the next, and a warm accent on the floor in between.

The hassock: a firm, thick cushion

Historically, a hassock was a firm kneeling cushion. Today the word describes a thick, densely stuffed footstool with no legs, very close to a firm pouf. In practice, many people use “hassock” and “ottoman” for the same thing.

How to choose the right one

  • For a coffee-table moment: a structured ottoman, or a square pouf with a tray on top.
  • For flexible seating: a leather pouf you can pull up when guests arrive.
  • For pure comfort under your feet: a firm pouf or hassock at about the height of your sofa seat, or slightly lower.

Size and filling

Our leather poufs come in two shapes:

  • Round: 20" wide × 13" high.
  • Square: 18" × 18" × 16" high.

Choose stuffed and ready to use, or unstuffed if you prefer to fill it yourself. Our square poufs come in firm or soft “cloud” seating, alone or in sets of 2 to 4. Custom sizes are available on request.

Why leather

Hand-stitched leather is durable and easy to wipe clean, and it softens and deepens in color over time. A cognac or tan pouf brings instant warmth to a neutral living room. In a rental home, a pair of leather poufs adds the Scandinavian-modern yet rustic touch that stands out in listing photos.
